Project Overview

UDCS Consulting was engaged by Ergon Energy to undertake detailed survey and design services to support the upgrade of three 33kV feeders in the western suburbs of Toowoomba.

An initial rating study completed by Ergon Energy had identified sections of the network requiring augmentation to meet anticipated summer peak demand. However, upon commencement of site investigations, UDCS Consulting identified discrepancies in the original study, prompting a revision of the project scope to undertake comprehensive feeder rating assessments.

Scope of Works

UDCS Consulting delivered full feeder rating studies for each of the three feeders, including:

  • Detailed on-site survey data capture using RTK and total station methods
  • Development of digital terrain and conductor models using PLS-CADD™
  • Processing and validation of survey and network data
  • Detailed rating analysis and reporting for each feeder

The studies assessed conductor clearances, thermal limits, and network constraints to determine true operating capacities under varying conditions.

Design Approach

The assessment was based on industry-standard methodologies for determining conductor ratings, with a focus on achieving a 75°C operating capacity as required by Ergon Energy.

Rather than relying on conservative static assumptions, UDCS Consulting applied detailed modelling and analysis to accurately assess actual field conditions. This included evaluating conductor clearances to ground, structures, and adjacent circuits under various climatic scenarios.

The studies were conducted in accordance with ESAA guidelines for conductor rating and overhead line design, ensuring both compliance and practical accuracy in the results.

Project Outcomes

  • Eliminated the need for unnecessary network augmentation works
  • Delivered cost savings to the client in the order of $400,000
  • Enabled early completion of the project phase and acceleration of subsequent works
  • Maintained network reliability and ensured supply during peak demand periods
  • Successfully delivered within required timeframes and to client expectations
